This is another of my favorite books for teaching someone to read.  The full title is Teach A Child to Read with Children’s Books which makes it even cooler, especially if you have a child who hates the beginning reader type books.  The author, Mark Thogmartin, has gleaned the picture books for pre-readers through grade 2 that you can use to help your child learn to read.

The book is quite thorough with step by step instructions and even scripts for the process.  When I used it, I followed just the high points of the process and used the reading lists extensively.

Some of the books are older and harder to find now but once you get the hang of the process, it’s not too hard to find other books that work as well. We can also ILL them for you.

Here at Southern Peaks, you can also do a keyword search for Thogmartin and find all the ones on his lists that we have.  If you have any questions about the book or the process, let me know.
