We have some secret tricks and goodies here on the catalog at Southern Peaks that I would like to make a lot less secret!  So check these out:

First, our catalog is online.  So you can search at home, use the “My List” tab and pre-select your books, print them off and come in with list in hand.  This is really handy when you’re in a hurry.  You can also see if an item is in or is checked out.

Second, I have cataloged separately all the books that we have from two terrific book lists. The first is Jim Trelease’s The Read-Aloud Handbook. (You really want to own a personal copy of this book, btw). The first half talks about the benefits of reading aloud; the second half is a listing by age and grade level of the best books for reading aloud.

Go to our catalog page, look down the left column, click on “Reading Lists,” and there they are!

The second resource is Thogmartin’s Teach a Child to Read Using Children’s Books (mentioned in a previous post). Go to the catalog, type in “Thogmartin” in the keyword search, and there’s the list.  Click on a book and you’ll see its reading level per Thogmartin’s book.

I do try to add to the collections from these lists and then update the catalog regularly.  But if you don’t see something you would like, just email and let me know.
